By the Sea

What fun it was to name those waves!
(Manu? Ezhil? Willy? Bulbul?)
What joy it was to shriek as they advanced,
In a perfectly choreographed cosmic dance.
‘Would that one be delicate?
And the one behind rough?’
We wondered and watched.

We held hands, trembling in anticipation,
And giggled with glee, as the waves kissed our feet.
We laughed out loud as they rose up
(As an afterthought) to our knees.

We saw the blue of the sky, pale and calm,
Meet the deep blue of the mighty sea…
And though tiny grains of sand we were
We blended Into the vastness of it all.

And now,
Long after we have left the sea behind,
We still carry the touch of the waves on our feet
And the sound of the waves in our ears -
The song
Rushing and echoing, rushing and echoing,
the music of the universe etched in our souls.
